Garfield and Friends - where did the Friends come from?

I enjoyed the show as a kid, but I never was much of a fan for the "Friends" portion, or the animals on the farm. I also don't recall ever seeing a comic in the newspaper with them in it, so just where did they come from and why were they added to Garfield's 90's cartoon show as a segment?
