Yes, RESPONSIBLE adults should take care of business, but only children expect to be taken care of without showing appreciation. There is a difference between being thanked for everything, and being made to feel appreciated. This can be as simple as NOT making a mess where someone else has just cleaned, and an occasional "the house looks great, Hon". I have lived with enough lazy, selfish men to know to appreciate one who DOES pitch in.
